I'm on the peninsula (palo alto) looking to buy a used car on a budget of around 5000. I've heard some bad things about BMW's reliability, and am still trying to decide between getting a used 3 or totally sack out and get a reliable japanese. The little voice in my head is screaming to go ahead and find a nice little 318 to fall in love with but I really have doubts, and so I guess I came to the most biased place possible to try to rationalize this decision... :)

What can you guys objectively (give it a shot?) say about the reliability...I'm guessing I can get something in the '93-'95 mode year range with my budget, right? I've heard the '92 318 should definitely be avoided. What year is supposed to be good? How often should I realistically expect this car to require repair? What are the parts that cause problems? Anything I should look out for when I do spot checks?

Please share your mid-90's 318 ownership experience!

Hey you guys. I've a 1987 325iC, the brake pressure has gone soft. The diagnosis is that the Master Cylinder is busted.

They quoted me almost $800 for the repair, including 4 hours of labor, apparently because the brake cylinder and clutch cylinder are "one and the same". I never knew this, I only knew that BMW master cylinders are double -one for the front brakes, one for the back.

So I have XXXX basic questions, maybe the tinkerers among you can provide some illumination:

1) Would it actually take 4 hours? I remember Brake Master Cylinders are easy-access, & a simple matter of two bolts, two lines, and a bleeding after. Why so long an estimate?

2) Is it really an intergrated Clutch/Master cylinder on that year model, or did they look at the doubled-up design of the bront-back brakes and confuse themselves?

3) There's a product (http://www.autopartsgiant.com/CAT_FRAMEX.cfm) advertised as a "Master Cylinder Repair Kit". I know that the only real issue with my cylinder is that it won't hold pressure. The cylinder PLUS reservoir would cost me up to $350 and this repair kit is only $50, so does anyone have experience with this kit and would you recommend it?

Thanks to you all for your feedback. Mostly I wanna know if I'm being screwed, and wanna find the most cost-effective repair.

I have two questions for you all.

1. There is a water leak happening upon the passanger and driverside floor boards. It can really stink in there due to the mold smell. But here's the deal. The drainage from the outside vents to the bottom of the car is unclogged. So it's working fine. Next, I did have the windshield replaced once but the business who did the work says that it would be impossible for water to seap under new window seals. So I can't figure out where this water is coming from. Also, I read that there are some "plugs" under the car where some water could get in, but these are in place. Lastly, I have a sun roof. Could this be where the water is coming from, even though the roof is closed and the seal looks to be in good condition. The car is a 83 320i.

2. Before I bought the car I thought the clock stays on all the time. Now after several dead batteries, a mechanic told me that the clock should go off when the ignition is off. Does anybody know how to remedy this situation?

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

What I'm wondering is, is there some sort of built in tank overflow? If I top the tank off, is it supposed to do this? And if so, do I need to take off the entire sunroof, or can I just take of the panel which holds the headliner? Also, in either case, is this a bitch of a job?

It won't stay idle with out my foot on the gas pedal, and it lurches at low speeds in forth or fith gear, but man is she fast. If this had been an audi, I doubt the car would of even made it into DE. I just wanted to thank all of you for all of your advice. That car is an aircraft on wheels.

Has anyone had the same idle problems? she starts fine for a few seconds, then the computer kicks in to keep her going for another 30 sec's, then she stalls. There is also a slight smell of gasoline, like lawn mower. I checked the plugs (systematically pulled the wires in firing order) but there was no major sounding difference. I'm going to take her in today to get checked out, but I'd like to have an idea of what the problem is so I don't get ripped off. I have this feeling that the idle and the lurching are the same problem.

problem:
ive noticed that for the past few weeks, my engine overheats (ie, the temp gauge starts creeping to the redline -- sometimes lights it up) when im in traffic. 1st/2nd/3rd gear shifting for a while, it overheats. on the interstate it's fine.

what ive done:
i change the oil regularly, not due for at least another thousand miles or so. topped off antifreeze (premixed 50/50 water/coolant). turning up the heat full blast sometimes alleviates it a little, but itll creep to the red again after a bit.

what could it be:
water pump? ive been told the old (>1996) water pumps have plastic impellars that tend to break.)
coolant leak? i havent smelled anything bad or seen puddles, but i dunno if that would be telltale enough.
bad fan? wouldnt even know where to start there.

so.

any thoughts? if i have to take it to the dealer, i at least want to go in with something to tell them so they dont rape me on labor costs. or parts, for that matter.

The damn car goes to sleep (so to speak) after 15 minutes. I am wondering if I can tap into the over head light or even the power roof line to get “ignition controlled” power to drive my Valentine One radar detector. I plike to have my detector mounted high and hidden with a remote visual locator & warning unit mounted on the dash nestled among the gauges.
This was a snap in my 328i and my 325 but the electronics on the 330 it’s a whole different beast.

The over head light seems not to be controlled by the ignition. The power roof seems to be controlled by a relay that’s activated by the roof switch – ERGO no power until the switch calls for it. Then, of course, the roof opens.
Anybody know??

It turns out there is the end of a rubber hose comming out of the metal body of the car, right above the tranny. We disconected the hoses in the engine compartment that lead to the draining hose and plugged them for a quick fix. We are guessing that it is part of the heating system but can't find anything on it in the manual. Thanks Chilton. Does anyone have any experience with this? I guess it is a valve stuck open somewhere but have no idea how to get to it or what it is called.

(i'd do it myself, but i lack the tools/tarps/etc for working underneath my car. soon to be remedied.) while i was waiting, i overheard the service manager talking to a woman* on the phone. she had called in asking what the light on her dashboard meant, and the manager was trying to ask her which light: oil service indicator, check engine light, or something else? after a good 10 minutes, the service guy had finally convinced her it was the "check engine" light and no, that doesnt mean you need your oil changed, ma'am, or that you're out of gas.

ok, so what's the point of this post, dave? right, sorry. my point is this:

if youre going to spend $30,000 on a car (or any decent amount of money on any one thing), for god's sake at LEAST read the manual to know the basics so you dont come across as a complete moron. i realize that many people who buy bmws have disposable incomes, but good jeez, people. know what youre putting your money into!

[id go off on a similar rant about people who have to have the latest and greatest space-aged, turbo-charged personal computers, but don't know the difference between 'memory' and 'disc space', and do nothing more than surf the web and check email... but that'd be for another tribe.]
Anyway, I had some friends w/ me in my '01 330i and we all had some fun... We drove through Philly on 95 south at about 125 (but getting as high as 135 or so) mph... What a blast. I was ahead of him most of the time but I got stuck behind someone and had to get behind him. That stretch of 95 is just cool.. driving under all kinds of overpasses and so forth. I kept up w/ him the whole time once I was behind him but I tried to stay a bit back so I could take advantage of other open lanes. My friend's gf who was in the back seat commented that it was like playing a video game. She never knew how fast we were actually going. Afterwards, we both slowed down and he was 2 lanes over and we both looked at each other and just smiled and nodded. What fun. Then, my friend's gf asked me how fast we were going... My response was "Do you remember when I said, "This guy's got some balls"? well, I had slowed a bit and looked at the speedo and it read 125". Her response was, "WOW... it totally didn't even feel like we were going that fast... I'm shocked". It was a the most fun I've had in my bimmer... rolling w/ a guy in an M3 passing a bunch of import guys and such. I don't do stuff like that frequently but man, was it fun to do. And, I can only imagine what the people we passed were thinking.

bottom line: $140 for something that will, in the long run, save you a lot of money if you ever have engine problems. seriously.
ive been noticing some engine knocking in my 1995 325i lately. it is a timed "tock... tick" sound, happens about every 4 or 5 seconds or so, the tick being slightly louder. if my hands are on the steering wheel, i can feel a slight tap when the tock and tick happen. ive tried listening to it under the hood but cant make it out; can only hear it inside the cabin, sounds like its from the steering column.

anyone have any clue?

potentially related: when slowing down (either downshifting or braking) somewhat suddenly, ive noticed what i can only describe as a resistance to brake. the car doesnt shudder, and my brakes (though squealy at times) are fine. it feels like the rpms of the engine are a little behind my braking, only i havent noticed anything unusual on the tachometer.

im new under the hood, and im looking to make some performance upgrades on my 325i. something simple to break me in, i guess. ive been looking at K&N air filter systems, but ive read that they might actually degrade the HP from stock. any suggestions? (on air filters or any other modifications youd recommend to a newbie.)

thanks :-)

ps. i posted this in tribe "BMW" and got *no* responses, im hoping i might have better luck here. even if it's just to say 'hey'. ;-)

I am new to the site and saw the BMW postings and wanted to stop by and say hi. Unfortunately I sold my 325CI 2001 to start a diamond company. However I have replaced it with a 2003 LS Impala, hahahah.
Take care ...maybe chat with you later.
