Hi everyone,
I'm on the peninsula (palo alto) looking to buy a used car on a budget of around 5000. I've heard some bad things about BMW's reliability, and am still trying to decide between getting a used 3 or totally sack out and get a reliable japanese. The little voice in my head is screaming to go ahead and find a nice little 318 to fall in love with but I really have doubts, and so I guess I came to the most biased place possible to try to rationalize this decision... :)

What can you guys objectively (give it a shot?) say about the reliability...I'm guessing I can get something in the '93-'95 mode year range with my budget, right? I've heard the '92 318 should definitely be avoided. What year is supposed to be good? How often should I realistically expect this car to require repair? What are the parts that cause problems? Anything I should look out for when I do spot checks?

Please share your mid-90's 318 ownership experience!
Thanks a lot in advance!

On an up-to-$5k budget, you could get a REALLY well maintained, unmolested, enthusiast owned E30 (up to 91) 325i sedan or 325is; or an even cherrier 318is. Although I would avoid the 1.8l 4 cylinder M42 motor of that vintage due to reliability issues and lack of power. (Although this car is super light and fun!)

I don't know your feelings on going a little bit older, but in my opinion, BMW really had the 3 series dead-on in 1990-1991, in terms of power to weight ratio, size and lack of electronic interference to driver input. They really looked great back then too (well, after the big metal bumpers, anyway.)

At that price point, the attainable e36's would be those in the earlier years (92-95) and with the lower output engine (M42 1.8l - prone to timing cover profile gasket failure, mentioned above) - you might be able to find a few 325's in that price range, but they're probably underloved and undermaintained; or crappily modified. A quick glance at craigslist and you could probably verify this.

As the e30's are getting older, the prices for 325i's and 325is's seem to hold strong for really good examples; whereas the earlier e36 prices seem to be falling. I can't verify that with hard statistics, but I think I've noticed a trend.

Anyway, that's my $.02 - Good luck in your search!

I bought my '91 325 convertible last year fer 5k, and she's running sweet. as far as I'm concerned, nothing after the E30 body style looks as good - and the inline six is an incredible engine. those era bmw's are super reliable - but you have to remember two things:

      1. if the previous owner didn't take proper care of it (ie: regular oil changes, etc), then no amount of good engineering is going to help you.

      2. bmw's in general are a little pricier to maintain as far as regular maintenance, but well worth it imo.

I say, go fer th' E30 - I liked 'em before I bought it, and now I can't imagine loving anything else more.

My own personal opinion, having had Both a BMW and a Mercedes, is that you just can't beat the German reliability. Sure, repairs are expensive, but they're few and far between. Don't get me wrong, I love Japenese cars - My next aquisition is going to be a '94 or '95 Honda Del Sol for a project car, but you just can't beat the style and quality of a BMW, no matter what age it is!

My advice on a $5K budget - E36 325 Coupe! You're only 5 BHP short of the 328, but your engine is a little lighter on the fuel. You'll enjoy the genuine pleasure of the 6 Cylinder 24v Engine, and have a slightly less weighty body to haul around than the saloon version! You should be able to pick up a decent '94 or '95 example (I'd avoid anything pre-'94) just under your $5K budget - Don't let high miles put you off - I had a150,000 Mile '95 E36 at one point, and it was still as sweet as ever!

Yah the $$ is about right./ I have had Bmmers for a lot of years not and I gotta say maintainance isn't a big deal. On the older cars you gotta do the timing belts every 60-thou miles but that's not a hard job - take you 4 hours your first time. OIther than that don't flood the car or you'll be in to a new set of plugs and they are pricey. That leaves a major tune up every couple of years depending on how much you drive.

A 95 (or there about ) will likely need at least one CV joint and a stub axle and you can do that in about than an hour.

I have a 94 318 that is a project car. As with all mid-90s 3-series, the most important thing to look after is the cooling system (hence this one now being a project car). I started having problems with the cooling system around 190,000 miles. I also have a 01 that is a blast to drive. Once I get that paid off I'm gonna go for an 07.

I wish I had known this before I got my 85 635CSi a few years back. It was an expensive nightmare. It's been great since then, but I'm not sure I would have taken it on if I knew what I know now.
