Hi Gang,
I have two questions for you all.
1. There is a water leak happening upon the passanger and driverside floor boards. It can really stink in there due to the mold smell. But here's the deal. The drainage from the outside vents to the bottom of the car is unclogged. So it's working fine. Next, I did have the windshield replaced once but the business who did the work says that it would be impossible for water to seap under new window seals. So I can't figure out where this water is coming from. Also, I read that there are some "plugs" under the car where some water could get in, but these are in place. Lastly, I have a sun roof. Could this be where the water is coming from, even though the roof is closed and the seal looks to be in good condition. The car is a 83 320i.
2. Before I bought the car I thought the clock stays on all the time. Now after several dead batteries, a mechanic told me that the clock should go off when the ignition is off. Does anybody know how to remedy this situation?
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.
Eric

Re: Water and a Clock.
Wed, November 15, 2006 - 9:34 PMwater - could be a leaky heater core? or a hose going to it?
my clock goes off when i turn the car off, so i don't know. maybe you have a bad ignition switch (which can lead to a multitude of problems). or maybe that button on the front of the clock could be stuck? (where you can re-set the clock that button in the middle...)
or it could just be those good ol' "german wiring gremlins" - i have an oil pressure light and an oxygen sensor light that keep blinking on when i am stopped at traffic signals or stop signs. oil pressure and oxygen sensor are fine. ghost in the machine.
good luck! -

Sat, November 18, 2006 - 11:43 AMhi sean,
i found that when my oil pressure light blinks when i come to a stop it is because for a moment the idle drops to low thus causing a momentary loss of oil pressure. your car should be running at an idle of at least 900 rpm. if not, then it will flicker at a stop. if you need to turn up the idle and don't know where to do that, let me know. i'll tell you where the secret hiding idle screw is. btw, you recently bought a 320i, right?
also, a few months ago my oil light was taking longer and longer to go off when i initially started the car. eventually it didn't go off so i immeadiatly shut the car down and had it towed to a bmw shop. there they removed the oil pan and discovered how mucky and clogged things were down there. so they cleaned it up. yet they said "perhaps" the loss of oil pressure could be to a failing oil pump. here's the bummer thing. just to take off the oil pan costs $350 ! that's not including the actual work done afterwards. so here's the moral of the story. if you do need to do some oil flow work, save your pennies. it's pricey to get down there!

Re: Water and a Clock.
Mon, November 27, 2006 - 8:46 PMhello eric -
i had the car tuned a few months ago and the mechanic noticed the oil/oxygen sensor lights coming on. i had mentioned it to him, but he wanted to tune the car first and then check things. he says the pressure is okay and the sensor is clean. so we have to track down a 'wiring gremlin' to see why this happens after the car has warmed up. the engine only has maybe 50k miles, so we'll see.
my new challenge is the suspension. next week - shocks/struts/springs/bushings and whatever else it needs to drive in a straight line and relatively on the same level at all 4 corners.
maybe a transmission service, too.
apparently, i don't plan on getting rid of this car soon! (yes, it's an 82 320i, automatic - the "forgotten" bmw)
i'm still looking for a pre-89 535i automatic though...

Thu, November 16, 2006 - 7:53 AMCheck out your sunroof drain hoses... those could be clogged too! (I had that problem in my '72 2002.) -
