88 Black 535i with 273,500 miles. She's an incredible ride, although a larger car than my first BMWs (71 Red 2002, then an 85 325e).
      I can't imagine driving anything else. :)

1995 325i. added 10cd changer+ new drivers; custom shift knob, thinking about a dinan chip. (any thoughts?) 184k miles.

and im saving my pennies for a 2004 edition80 rockster. :-)

'92 525 Touring ~ 160k. My kid drove it without water and cracked the head, but having synthetic oil in it saved the engine; I put some stuff in the radiator so it doesn't leak water into the cylinders anymore. She's a little fragile (the car, not the kid), but I love her (both of them).

I would love to have a 1977 BMW 2002. Those cars are like little race cars. Does anyone have any experence with these?

2002s were made from 1968 to 1976. There is no 1977 2002. That said, I once owned a 1971 2002. It's very rough and crude compared to the current BMWs, but it has that "feel" BMWs are known for. With some minor mods, it was a great handling car, and very easy to drive. Mine had a 4 speed. Lots of glass so it was easy to see out of. They tended to be rust buckets, and mine developed the typical rust in the rear shock towers. I traded mine in for a 1978 320i years later...

I've got a '71 2002 right now. She handles like a dream. If you want one, make sure to get pre-'74, since you won't have to deal with smog inspections, and the tail-lights went square in '74 (the roundies are cooler). Oh, and you should be able to pick one up in pretty good condition for about $4000.

Yeah well they did not make 2002's in 77, 1976 was the last year and they were good ones, but I have a round tail light 1971 and they are the sweetest ones. The roundies were made from 1968 to 1973, and are the most collectable, with the added benefit of easier to work own due to less emission controls to deal with and added on safety equipt. Good luck and if I can answer any questions for you let me know, I have owned mine for over 8 years and do all the work to it including the restoration, myself....cj.

I have a maroon 1975 2002. It only has 93K original miles on it. The strut wells are all solid, but I am getting some decay on the lower body side. Riccaro seats, pioneer stereo and a sun roof. Man I love the sound my engine makes at 70Mph, it's like it is singing.

I don't drive it much, it is parked in the garage, the tags are going to expire end of july, (boo hoo).

I do all the work on my car, but damn, I'm starting to have a hard time finding parts. Anyone have a lead on that?

      Wed, April 14, 2004 - 5:16 PM
did you do any testing before/after you popped the K&N in? ive been told by a number of bimmer mechs that it actually decreases the HP by 5-15. (i was going to do the same, but got discouraged.)
      • Re: Type of BMW u have?

        Thu, April 15, 2004 - 9:02 PM
I feel a much snappier throttle response and it feels like the power 'turns on' faster. Plus it sounds GREAT!
I can't imagine someone discouraging you from putting a K&N on. If nothing else, it gives you much more superior filtering capabilities, which will make your engine last longer. You can get way better air flow through the engine - that means more power.
        • Re: Type of BMW u have?

          Tue, April 20, 2004 - 4:50 AM
i suppose there are arguments for and against it. heres one of the sites i read that had a stock vs K&N filter debate:

          www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Up..._filter.htm

you know your car better than i do (i would hope!), so i wouldnt worry, your filter upgrade is likely fine. for me, though, the fact that a debate even exists was enough to keep me from messing with it. if i really feel the need for power, ill install a racing chip. :-)

I have a 2003 325i... upgraded rims, harmon kardon, titanium molding inside, etc... I have had it almost a year and I love it. It's my first BMW and the best car (as far as comfort and handling) I have ever driven.

    Lotta cool Bimmers here!

Mine is a 99 Titanium Silver M3 Coupe with 67,000 miles on it.

Parts that have started to or have a reputation for early failure such as the guibo, rear shock mounts, shifter pivot bushing, shocks and struts have been or will be changed for better ones if available.

    I love this car!

I just got my hands on a 1993 525i with a great engine but in need of some love aesthetically. The interior is in a bad way, but the outside looks great. It's in the shop til tonight getting new struts and shocks. I've already taken a look at Bav Auto's website, but it needs new leather and a new driver's seat. Whoever had it before was a fat fuck. We'll just leave it at that. Any ideas on where to start on the seat and the leather? Also, I'm thinking of replacing the door cards in the dark gray. The interior is the three tone: light and dark gray with the burlwood. All things considered, I think I got a pretty good deal.

I have found a lot of great parts in like new condition, at junk yards, especially U-Pull-It type yards... gracefully used parts will match yours having similar wear & tear.
Simple, remove and replace type items can be done by the owner, saving $$$! I had power seats rebuilt, and it cost an arm & a leg...

        Sat, October 23, 2004 - 12:49 PM
You haven't seen this seat. :) It's really bad.

But, yeah, once I get finished restoring, I'll put up some pics. Any good magazines out there for bimmer owners that aren't all flashy? I picked up one last week, namely "BMWScene" that left me mortified. Almost every bimmer in it looked like a honda.
        • Re: Type of BMW u have?

          Sat, October 23, 2004 - 8:26 PM
the reason I suggested getting a seat at a junkyard, and replacing it yourself: the seat is attached with only 4 bolts, which anyone with a crappy socket set can unscrew. You can do the job in like 15 minutes...

But if you insist on brand new upholstery, West Coast Metric is a good supplier I've bought from.

BMW Car Club of America, and their member's magazine 'the Roundel' is an excellent resource for archive articles, tech bulletins, events, and cool people (there's even a directory of members, for when you are traveling/broke down on the road)!

Thanks for the link. I've been looking at the junkyards up here, but it looks like there's only one that buys bimmers and it's in seattle. About an hour away. Not a big deal, just have to find the time to get up there.

              Hi All,

Picked up a maroon 85' 635CSi this summer. Lovin it. It's more comfortable doing 80mph than 30mph. 190k miles so there have been some replacement parts, but it's still pretty clean. Don't know if they all came that way, but it's a 5 speed. Vroooom.
              • Re: Type of BMW u have?

                Tue, October 26, 2004 - 7:09 PM
Awesome you got a 5 speed!
Definitely more for an ENTHUSIAST... rather than focused on luxury & convenience.
We all seem to take pride in the solid reliability that is part of these cars' design: High Mileage is not a detriment! My '87 325 had 240k on it, when I bought it (the previous owner commuted 100 miles each way). When I sold it to a co-worker, she took it to the dealer to continue following the service interval schedule. They told her, that it was the best condition example they had seen, at 300k!!!
I've always sworn by regular oil changes (Castrol), and bought only German oil filters (double paper elements), even when I had the change done by Jiffy Lube.

please read my post on the 'booooring!' thread!

The 2.7 litre 'eta' engine in the 528e, is identical to yours, as well as my 300k 325 (in '87 they dropped the e from the badge. 325i models have the 2.5)

                    > the 'eta' engine is a higher compression, lower redline motor (4500 rpm vs. 6500rpm). The emphasis being more low-end torque and higher mpg. It turns out that this motor, although lower horsepower than a regular BMW engine, has a higher reliability record! Check Consumer Reports, you'll see the proof!

      2003 M5. Just got it.

I was on the waiting list for the '05. Then I saw the "Banglebutt" styling, and thought "oh, well - still got the 500hp V10". Then I found out that it has the SMG - no conventional manual.

Sold my spot on the list and bought the best 2003 I could find. 6k miles, dark metallic gray, black (grown-up) leather. Park distance control and enhanced sound. It's lovely. If I want 500hp, I'm only eight hours from Dinan.

It joins my '97 SL500 AMG in the garage. Another car whose successor didn't live up to its forebears.

My family had and drove 2002's from about 1974 to the early 90's. We probably had about six all together...? My dad still has a -- I think - '73 tii.
My first car was a silver/rust '71 (round taillights) called Rover, second was a fjord blue '73 with a cracked head. I have an Audi now, but when I see a 2002 it brings a tear to my eye. I had a lot of fun with those cars, and may own one again later when I get the space and time.

Only thing: with every 2002 I've ever owned, there has been an overheating problem. Solution: turn on the heater full blast and drive with the windows down. It was nice here in Alaska in the winter, but a bit warm in summer...

Randy, isn't the maroon color called "malaga?"

Also, my mom was Pacific Zone Governor of BMWCCA for a while, and finding parts for those things is a lot easier throught the club, ads in the Roundel, etc.

87 325i 4dr commuter car (soon to be reborn as a modified street demon)

84 633CSi, metric mechanics 3700 rally motor, 5 spd, racing suspension, and many other go fast goodies.

I may one day stop being so slack and actually post pics of them.

My first German car was an VW Jetta.

From there I went to 1985 528e which I bought used and kept for 130k miles.

Along the way I added a 1987 325is which I backed into a tree after fishtailing on a wet road trying to avoid an idoit who came across the centerline headed for me on a two lane road with deep, deep ditches on each side. Fortunately I scrubbed off most of the speed before hitting wood.

I then went for a 1989 325ix which was the best handling BMW I have ever been in short of a Mini Cooper and the new M5. The 325ix was true love for twelve years.

The BMW bug really bit hard in 2003 when I bought my 1975 3.0cs and began its restoration.

I have become disenfranchsied by the latest complex electronics and Bangle butt styling. So my latest additions to the stable have been a C280 and CLK 55 from those other Germans....

there's a couple for sale up here in sonoma county - 1981 & 82 i think - for cheap (parts!!!)
320i's i'm talkin' about. if i had the storage space, i'd buy a couple just to have the parts!

mine needs interior work and a couple of body issues addressed, but it runs STRONG for a car with 160k on it. and for something mechanical that's 24+ years old.

I bought a pre-owned 2003 325i about 2 months ago, with 42,000 miles. This is my first BMW and I absolutely LOVE IT!...I had a 2006 Toyota Corolla before the BMW and what a difference in the "safety/secure" feel this car has. I love the solidness you feel when you just shut the door..then you crank her up..what a beautiful sound. Hopefully I will have this car for a long, long time with very few problems..so far so good. One thing I'm not sure of..if the stereo system in this car is Harmon-K...would the emblem be on the grill of the speakers?

    Thanks for any responses.

        e28 represent!

I'm back once again in an 87 535is with 162k MINT miles, cinnabar red on 17" BBS wheels from an e39. Way nicer than the lachsilber one I had in the earlier part of the decade. Still has the original glovebox mounted flashlight - and a backseat that I swear no one has ever ridden in. I still can't believe what a museum piece gem of a find this is. Recently bought off of Craigslist SF.

Also, no longer in the garage, but in the driveway - an 05 MINI Cooper (non-S) with sport package.

Great to be back in a Bimmer!
